Please find details of how to care for your door and window furniture, how to keep it looking good and get it to last for many years! Information can be found below on care for brass, nickel, iron, pewter, wood, glass & porcelain finishes.

PRODUCT CARE  DOOR FURNITURE & WINDOW FURNITURE

BRASS

Almost all our brass products are supplied polished and unlacquered as it would have been in days gone by. If left untouched the finish will naturally tarnish and darken over time. To retain a polished finish it should be cleaned with a proprietary metal polish (eg Brasso or Harringtons)

LACQUERED BRASS

Not often sold by us, the modern way to finish brass so it keeps the polished look with no need for cleaning. It may need an occasional wash with soapy water and application of a good wax polish. Lacquer life is limited (especially on cheap brassware) cannot be guaranteed and will eventually break down. Once this has started, remaining lacquer should be removed with paint stripper and then cleaned with a metal polish.

NICKEL

This is a nickel plating, which on our products is over a solid brass base. Wash with warm soapy water and apply wax polish occasionally to keep the appearance. Do not rub or use metal polish as this will eventually remove the plated finish.

IRON

Beeswax Finish

These products are treated with a special wax finish giving a period look to the metal. This gives excellent protection when used internally. Sometimes because of temperature changes your product may have a slight white bloom, a polish with a soft cloth will restore the finish. When products lose their wax coating, this is unavoidable where eg  products are fitted in damp bathrooms  damp properties or where items are frequently rubbed over time. If this occurs we recommend an application of maintenance wax. Please contact us to purchase a small pot. You should then wire wool the area and apply wax with a rag or brush. Where there are obvious abrasive areas of working parts, metal on metal we recommend an occasional light oiling.

Powder Coated Finish

This is an attractive corrosion resistant finish which can last 15-20 years, before it needs a repainting. It is an excellent low maintenance finish for external use. Just wipe with a damp cloth if it needs any cleaning at all.

PEWTER

This is also an excellent low maintenance finish for external use. Just wipe occasionally with a damp cloth.

WOOD

Wipe with a soft dry cloth, very occasionally you could apply a traditional wax polish eg Briwax or Fiddes. For brass backplates see unlacquered brass section above, for nickel backplates see Nickel section above.

GLASS

Wipe over with warm water to clean. For brass backplates see unlacquered brass section above, for nickel backplates see Nickel section above.

PORCELAIN

Wipe over with warm water to clean.
